Ministry began in 2000 when the homeless people of Elgin told the ministry
founders, Angelo and Norina Valdes, that they didn’t know where they would stay
once PADS closed for the summer. It was early spring and still cold outside. The
homeless wouldn’t have anywhere to go until fall when the PADS shelter reopened. Beginning that early spring, the Valdes family provided shelter each night on a full sized school bus. Food and clothing were given to those in
need. The ministry continued to grow
and now includes a community center, a chapel, a food pantry and a shelter in both St. Charles and Elgin.
.."Is this not the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter - when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?..." Isaiah 58:6-7
